Project Description

School Extension Project

FSG was appointed by Milton Keynes Council to construct a single storey ‘bolt-on’ extension at Lavendon School to include one classroom, a cloak room and associated toilets, and internal alteration work and refurbishments to the existing school building. FSG Property Services also altered an original set of washrooms, to create extra wash space for the children on the other side of the school.

The outside area around the extension was developed as an extra playground/area for the smaller children. This included ground being leveled and new tarmac being laid, a new ramp access was created, complete with hand rails, new fencing was added to separate the difference of the ground floor and the higher ground levels.

Parking was limited for the staff, therefore FSG Property Services were instructed to use the long stretch of green alongside the main entrance of the school as extra parking. To achieve this in an eco-friendly way a Heavy-Duty Turf Projection Mesh was used across the area. Being so light weight, this type of material helped maintain the natural ground conditions, with the capability to drain rainwater whilst ensuring no damage was caused to any tree roots or bushes. These extra parking spaces now blend naturally with the environment.

The works to the extension had to be carried out whilst the school is still occupied and therefore comprehensive Health & Safety measures with full segregation between the school and the site were put in place.

A key challenge for this project was the location – being located in a small village, off a main road and with one single road leading towards the school and site entrance, congestion was a regular issue. With this in mind, one of the main priorities was to ensure that the risk towards the parents, teachers and children due to heavy congestion was minimised.
